INTRODUCTION

Establishment of Veterinary Dispensary in Kathmandu in 1996 BS was a landmark event for initiating animal health services in Nepal. Since then, veterinary service system has been expanded, improved and diversified from time to time to provide better and efficient services to farmers, pet owners and livestock industries.Representing the His Majesty's Government on animal health sector , this Division is committed to provide preventive and laboratory services to poor people to protect their livestock animals from various diseases.

On the other hand , this Division is carrying out various activities for public health protection and quality control.Although curative services are provided from   district veterinary units, it is planned to expand and improve the quality of clinical services through privatization of veterinary services in potential urban areas.

The following activities are carried out to fulfill the above mentioned objectives and implement animal health policies at national level:

* Set standard , norms and develop monitoring system to improve quality of veterinary services and livestock production as a whole.

*Coordinate technical aspects of veterinary service with national and international organizations to provide effective and quality animal health services.

Organizational structure and available manpower for successful implementation of animal health programme are presented in table 1 and 2.
